The following course descriptions are for Ministry Studies and Internships.
MIN 101 Liturgics Workshop: A practical, hands-on course in conducting the worship of the church in the Book of Common Prayer tradition. Includes examining the Daily Offices, Litany, Holy Matrimony, and Holy Communion services. Experienced pastors will share their insights on the challenges and opportunities of leading the liturgies. Pre- or co-requisite: MIN 601. Short residency (2 days). Pass/Fail. 1 semester hour. This course not availbale for audit. WINTER CONFERENCE.
MIN 102 Academic Writing: An introduction to the style and mechanics of writing academic essays and term paper. The focus will be mainly on Turabian/Chicago, but other authorities will be used as well, including MLA and APA. Pass/Fail. 1 semester hour. FALL & SPRING.
MIN 103 Introduction to Mentoring for Ministry Formation: A survey of the principles and practicing of mentoring, especially in the context of mentoring held in conjunction with academic courses at ASM. Pass/Fail. 1 semester hour. FALL & SPRING.
MIN 501 Ministry of the Deacon: An introduction to the biblical and theological basis for the historical usage and the pastoral and liturgical functions of the office of deacon. Special consideration will be given to the importance of the vocational/permanent deacon in the contemporary church. 3 semester hours. SUMMER.
MIN 502 History and Practice of Anglican Polity: The course covers the historical practice of the three key aspects of the episcopal polity of the Anglican Church: the roles of the three offices of ordained ministry and lay leaders in the pastoral care and government of the church, the content and purpose of canon law, and the practice of ecclesiastical discipline. 3 semester hours. SPRING.
MIN 504 History and Practice of Spiritual Formation: This course exams the history, theory, and practice of spiritual disciplines and devotion to deepen ones' relationship with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. 3 semester hours. SUMMER.
MIN 601 Anglican Worship: A study of the liturgical practices and theology of the Anglican tradition in light of the historical uses and theories of liturgy in the catholic church with special emphasis on the Book of Common Prayer and its ordinal. 3 semester hours. FALL.
MIN 602 Christian Education: A survey of the biblical theology of Christian education and its practice in the local church. Includes instruction on designing courses and lessons. 3 semester hours. FALL.
MIN 603 Pastoral Care: An in-depth examination of the "cure of souls"—the theory and practical of pastoral care, including discipleship, mentoring, spiritual directing, dealing with crises, and the personal spiritual life of the pastor. 3 semester hours. SUMMER.
MIN 604 Missiology: A survey of the theology, history, and practice of the Church's Great Commission mandate. Includes case studies of various domestic and foreign missions. 3 semester hours. FALL.
MIN 605 Homiletics: A study of the science and art of Biblical preaching. Emphasis is on expository preaching from the text of Scripture. Requires video recording of two student sermons with local parish review. Pre- or co-requisites: BIB 505 and BIB 604. 3 semester hours. SPRING.
MIN 606 Teaching Methods: Advanced study of the various, age-appropriate methods of teaching, including both formal and informal contexts. Requires video recording of two student lectures with local parish review. Pre- or co-requisites: BIB 505 and BIB 604. 3 semester hours. SPRING.
MIN 607 Church Planting: An investigation in the theology, history, and practice of church planting, especially as an expression of the Church's Great Commission mandate. Includes case studies of various plants. 3 semester hours. SUMMER.
INT 601 Ministry Internship: A year-long internship in spiritual and ministry formation in the local church. 6 semester hours. FALL, SPRING, & SUMMER.
MICHAEL FORREST; Instructor of Ministry StudiesMike Forrest has served several ministry capacities including non-profit executive director and lead pastor. He has served as a Fellow in the Center of Christian Leadership at Dallas Theological Seminary and teaching assistant to the Chairman of Pastoral Ministries department at DTS. He is a graduate of University of Central Arkansas (BBA, Marketing) and Dallas Theological Seminary (ThM, Leadership). He currently is a project manager with Acxiom Corporation. Mr Forrest is married to Marian, a Senior Sales Director with Mary Kay Cosmetics. They have two children.
THE VEN DR BENNETT NWORIE; Adjunct Professor of Ministry StudiesDr Nworie is a Presbyter and Archdeacon in the Anglican Mission in the Americas, previously serving in the Southern Baptist and Free Methodist Churches. He is an Associate Professor in the School of Education at Azusa Pacific University, California where he is also the Faith Integration Coordinator. He has been in education for about thirty years with teaching experience at the college and K-12 levels. He is a Consultant, a Conference speaker, and a Licensed Professional Counselor. He holds a BSc in Religious Studies, a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE), an MA in Pastoral Theology, and an MDiv from the Criswell College, an MS, in Counseling from the University of North Texas, and a PhD in Special Education from Texas Women’s University. The Ven Nworie is currently planting an AMiA church in Inland Empire, California. Dr Nworie and his wife of 33 years, Olive (a nurse practioner) have three grown children and two granddaughters.
THE REV NOLAND PIPES; Assistant Professor of Ministry StudiesThe Rev Noland Pipes has been an Anglican priest for over forty years, serving five congregations and a boarding prep school before retiring from St. John’s Episcopal Church, Memphis, TN., in order to begin a church planting ministry in the Anglican Mission. He has participated in the formation of four new congregations. His passion for youth ministry, high quality liturgical practice and evangelism as led to his becoming a frequent teacher, coach, consultant and a faculty member of the Anglican School of Ministry. Prior to ordination, he served on active duty in the U. S. Air Force. He holds a BA from Virginia Military Institute, and an MDiv and doctoral studies from the University of the South. He and wife, Mary, have been blessed with two adult daughters and six grandchildren.
Dr. Quay is a presbyter in the Anglican Mission, previously serving in the Evangelical Presbyterian and the Reformed Episcopal Churches. He is a retired Air Force major (prior-enlisted), having served 23 years. He holds a Diploma in Arabic from the Defense Language Institute, a Diploma in Religious Studies from the University of Cambridge, an MDiv from Covenant Theological Seminary, and a DMinEd from American Christian College & Seminary. He is a candidate for the DMin with Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Mark is a former pastor, church planter, headmaster, and Visiting Professor of Christian Education at Euroseminar in Germany. While living in England he was a Foundation Governor for the Diocese of Ely. He teaches and consults at Kigali Anglican Theological College. He and his wife Jani have three adult children, one daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren.
THE REV DR DONALD SHEPSON; Adjunct Associate Professor of Ministry StudiesThe Rev Don Shepson is a presbyter in the Anglican Mission in America. He is a currently teaching full-time at Montreat College near Asheville, NC and is planting a church East Asheville (Fellowship of Christ the Redeemer). He is a graduate of Wheaton College (BA Sociology, 1990), Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary (MDiv, 2001) and received the PhD in Educational Ministries from Talbot School of Theology. Don grew up in a Christian home with a lineage of faithful Christian family. He heard God’s call to ministry while working with Junior High boys leading a wilderness program. He has been in ministry since then (almost 20 years) in various forms: camp director, program director, youth pastor, college pastor, resident director, assistant pastor, professor and church planter. He is married to Sara, and they have 3 girls (ages 9, 7, and 17 months) and a boy (age 4).
