Certificate in Diaconal Studies (CDS, 29-30 semester hours)

[for holders of a Bachelors: Graduate Certificate in Diaconal Studies (GCDS, 29-30 semester hours]

Introduction: The Certificate in Diaconal Studies is designed to provide students with the necessary theological education, spiritual formation, and practical training needed to become a vocational/permanent deacon in the Anglican Church. For those already holding a bachelor’s degree, it is awarded as the Graduate Certificate in Diaconal Studies.

Program Goal: The goal of the CDS program is to provide fully-equipped ordained Anglican vocational/permanent deacons for effective Gospel-centered ministry in the Anglican Church through high quality theological education, spiritual formation, and ministry training to students in their local congregations.

Program Objectives

CDS program graduates will be able to …

  • Proclaim Jesus Christ as the way, the truth, and the life and that there is salvation only in His name. All BIB courses and THE 501; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Faithfully perform the sacramental and pastoral duties of an Anglican deacon. Curricular elements: MIN 501 and MIN 601; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Lead the Church in the worship of the worship of God the Holy Trinity in spirit, in truth, and in the beauty of holiness. MIN 101 and MIN 601; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Disciple and form Christians to continually grow in the grace of God and Christ-like character. Curricular elements: MIN 501; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Provide missional leadership for the Church’s outreach to the lost, the un-churched, and the under-churched. Curricular elements: Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Practice prophetic leadership for the Church’s witness to society. Curricular elements: Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Possess competence in preaching and teaching the Word of God. Curricular elements: All BIB courses; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Know, understand, communicate, and apply the disciplines of Biblical, Theological, and Ministry studies from an Anglican perspective. Curricular elements: All BIB, THE, and MIN courses; Mentoring Program; INT 601.
  • Exercise personal spiritual disciplines to be faithful to God’s call to ministers to be holy,
  • faithful, and loving. Curricular elements: Mentoring Program, INT 601.
  • Understand and communicate the distinctives of Anglican doctrine and history to develop an Anglican ethos and contextual framework for ministry. Curricular elements: THE 501, MIN 501, and MIN 601; Mentoring Program; INT 601.

 

Length of Program: Although it is possible to complete this program over a 1½ year period, the CDS is normally completed over a timeframe of two years. In order to accomplish this, the student must take an average of 6 semester hours of academic courses each semester. It is recommended that the internship be completed during the last 3 semesters of the student’s program. Students have up to 3 years to complete this program. Extensions may be authorized by the Dean.

 

Admission Requirements:

  • CDS: at least 35 years of age and a high school/GED graduate.
  • To receive the GCDS, an accredited BA (or equivalent) in any discipline.
  • Both: Approval of the relevant ecclesiastical authority and membership in an orthodox Christian church.

 

Transfer of Credit, Credit for Life Experience, and Advanced Standing

  • Up to 6 semester hours at the graduate level may be transferred in to these programs;
  • 2 semester hours may be awarded toward INT 601 for each year of non-Anglican ordained or licensed full-time ministry experience, up to a maximum of 4 semester hours. 3 semester hours may be awarded toward INT 601 for each year of Anglican ordained or licensed fulltime ministry experience, up to a maximum of 6 semester hours. Credit for part-time ministry may be awarded on a prorated basis.
  • Students who have taken courses at the undergraduate or graduate level which are equivalent to ASM courses thereto may, at the discretion of the President, be given permission to substitute other ASM courses in lieu thereof.

 

Graduation Requirements:

  • Complete all required course work with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.
  • All student financial obligations are paid in full.
  • Maintain a consistent Christian witness and ecclesiastical endorsement.
  • Receive the approval of the Dean and faculty.
