A parish-based community of spiritual and ministry formation serving the Anglican Church
Relationships are an fundamental part of ministry. We have a unique and effective way to help students grow through relationships in Mentoring.
Your Mentor is an essential component to your formation at ASM. When I researched mentoring programs at other Anglican theological schools (as well as seminaries in other traditions), I found our program was unique in several important aspects.
The mentoring program represents a substantial time commitment. The time you spend with your mentor is considered part of your face-to-face class time. Most ASM courses are 3 semester hours, which represents a total of 37 to 38 hours of classroom time. Your WebEx meetings account for around 26 hours of this. The remainder of the time requirement (about 11 to 12 hours) is covered in your mentoring meeting. You will need to meet with your mentor a minimum of six times over the course of a semester for 1½ to 2 hours each session.
The mentoring program is connected to the academic experience. The mentoring program is designed to connect what you are learning in the classroom with your ministry and your personal spiritual growth. The instructors will provide you with six worksheets which you and mentor will work on (one per session). The worksheet does include questions of course work accomplishment, but it also seeks to integrate the knowledge you are gaining into a comprehensive understanding of how it applies to specific areas in your life. Each worksheet pushes you to answer the question, "So what?"
The mentoring program is highly structured. While seeking to allow appropriate flexibility for your and your mentor's needs, there is structure provided so that you and your mentor can get the greatest benefit possible from your mentoring experience. As you saw, there are instructor-provided worksheets which tie the coursework directly to your mentoring. Submission of these completed worksheets is a part of the grade for each course. In addition to that, during your first year of studies, you and your mentor will be trained by ASM in the who, what, where, when, why, and how. Successful completion of this training results in a passing grade for MIN 103, a required one-semester hour course.
